ragtime cyclist: on the road

on the road

To many, Italy is the land of food, art, romance, history and anarchic city centre traffic. To the average cyclist, it’s the land of Bianchi, Pinarello, Coppi, Pantani, Cipollini, and the Giro d’Italia.

It’s a cycling mecca.

Mention the Passo dello Stelvio to many cyclists and they will either jabber with excitement at the very idea, or turn pale and breathless recounting some epic two wheeled ascent.

Talk of Fausto Coppi brings to mind the movie star looks and the woollen jerseys of one of the greats. Mention Cippolini and you’re straying into territory that includes leopard-skin cycling kit and all manner of conjecture and controversy.

In short…take all this passion and history, bundle it up with some rather nice hotels, guided rides by expert Italian ride leaders, and include ascents of the Stelvio and the Mortirolo (among many others).

Then squeeze in a couple of private tours of Bianchi and Pinarello, refuel each day with great food in stunning surroundings, and fill any remaining spare time talking cycling with other people who really like to talk cycling.

And you end up with…

Ciclismo d’Italia: a pro-cycling pilgrimage of high roads and hairpin bends.

Places are limited, but if you’re quick you can join me and a group of like-minded cyclists in 2018, for a luxury celebration of all things pro-cycling in Italy – this might just be the best cycling holiday you’ve ever had!
